The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) at Stellenbosch University is seeking a Junior Engineer for a one-year fixed-term contract. Based on the Stellenbosch campus, this role focuses on engineering analysis and modelling to support the integration of renewable energy sources into power grids. The successful candidate will use advanced simulation tools, conduct performance and financial analysis, and contribute to technical documentation and academic publications. The position also involves mentoring junior engineers and participating in workshops and project activities. Responsibilities

• Perform grid modelling and simulation using DIgSILENT PowerFactory
• Conduct steady-state power flow, stability, and probabilistic power system analysis
• Develop custom Python scripts for engineering tasks in PowerFactory
• Design and evaluate solar PV systems
• Use MATLAB Simulink for dynamic system simulations
• Run electromagnetic simulations using Ansys Maxwell
• Perform performance and financial analysis using SAM software
• Write technical reports, research papers, and documentation
• Prepare presentations and data visualisations for workshops and meetings
• Program in Python, Java, and/or C for modelling and analysis
• Use Microsoft Office tools for reporting and analysis
• Participate in academic writing and publishing
• Support and mentor junior engineers and interns
• Communicate fluently in English during professional interactions

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in electrical engineering with a speciality in renewable energy
• At least two years’ experience in renewable energy resource and geospatial modelling
• At least one year’s experience in power system modelling for renewable energy integration
• Proficiency in DIgSILENT PowerFactory and other power system analysis tools
• Competence in Python coding for automation and scripting
• Experience with MATLAB Simulink and Ansys Maxwell
• Proven experience in solar PV system design and SAM software
• Ability to work professionally with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
• Fluency in Afrikaans during professional interactions
